Affiliate Links
My goal is to bring you scientific research, knowledge about animals and the environment, and conservation tips for free though this blog. I work as a scientist full-time and do this all in my spare time. Each blog post takes a lot of time and effort both in writing and in research. I do it because I love it. Affiliate links help me do this.
While some careers in science are incredibly lucrative, conservation biology is not one of them (for more, read “Financial Stability in Academia: An Ode to My Dad“). My goal as a conservationist is to not just sell you stuff you don’t need to make money, but to share with you products I love and that I think you will love too.
Please note that some of the links I use are affiliate links and at no additional cost to you. That means I will earn a commission if you decide to make a purchase after clicking through the link. I have experienced most of these products and/or companies, and I recommend them because I found them to be helpful/useful and wish someone had pointed them out to me. I carefully consider the products that I choose in affiliate links and typically use those that are educational, beneficial to wildlife, or will replace other products that you already use in your daily life that are not as environmentally-friendly.

Addressing concerns about Amazon:
*COVID 19 update: I am not happy with how Amazon’s sick leave policy during the COVID 19 pandemic and their work conditions in general. I am in the process of moving of finding new affiliates. I frequently recommend books and products to connect people to nature (e.g. binoculars). If you are or know of a good company who sells similar products please contact me.
As a conservation biologist, I know I will come under fire from advertising Amazon through an affiliate program because of their impact on the environment. However, I do not think boycotting Amazon will be effective for several reasons. Amazon is too big to suffer from a boycott. They have streaming, books, their store, Audible, and Whole Foods. I’ve been boycotting Walmart for decades, but as long as people search for the cheapest possible option, a company will exist for them to purchase from. It used to be Walmart and now it is Amazon.
Rather, I advocate for buying fewer things in general, at the slowest shipping speed, and from better brands.
I, by all means, request that people shop local first. My family owns a small business and therefore I understand the important of supporting families. However, some people do not have access to local businesses that sell the types of products that I recommend (for instance, they may live in a small town), the products that I recommend are obscure and are likely not available locally (like this R Book), or they are products that you would buy at another mega store (For example, in this post I featured light bulbs). Is it better that people drive to Home Depot or Lowe’s to get lightbulbs? Do you have a local store that sells light bulbs in your area? Maybe, maybe not.
I am very selective about the products that I post on Amazon and post products that I have used and worked for me.
Like my stance on palm oil, I don’t think that Amazon is something that can be fought, but something that we need to push for more sustainable action on.
Thank you so much for supporting me! I truly appreciate every single one of you and am grateful I get to share my love and knowledge of animals with the world.
