Hi! I’m Dr. Stephanie Manka
I’m a wildlife biologist with nearly 20 years of experience in the field. I’ve collaborated with K-12 educators for nearly a decade to create engaging STEM lessons for students to conduct REAL science. Here’s a highlight of some of the things I’ve done:
- Studied forest elephants in Gabon and got chased by them!
- Climbed to the top of Mount Kenya, recreating Teddy Roosevelt’s famous expedition with the Smithsonian
- Taught teachers and children all over the world how to set up camera traps, received amazing photos of endangered species or cool animals like tigers, jaguars, and rhinos
- Wrote the children’s book, My First Book of Earth
About Me:
I LOVE getting kids excited about REAL science. Here are some of my credentials that I bring to the table:
- BA in 2003, Ph.D. in 2012
- Experience in the government, zoos, museums, universities, and alongside nonprofits in cool places like Disney’s Animal Kingdom and the School for Wildlife Management in Kenya
- Study species and systems across four continents (my expertise is forest elephants)
- 20+ scientific publications in topics like animal behavior, mammal communities, predator-prey relationships, genetics, telemetry, social science, and community (citizen) science
